This course is designed to help students develop the skills necessary to become active and engaged community leaders by exploring the cultural, political and historical context of social movements in the United States. Participants will examine ongoing social movements such as the Civil Rights movement, labor movement, environmental activism, women’s movement, etc. and develop a basic understanding of their origins and outcomes. Guided by a supervising political science faculty member and guest speakers, students will discuss ways in which they too can become leaders.
This course is more than a history lesson in social change. It encourages mature reflection, active discussion, and personal growth. Students should come prepared to engage in thoughtful, positive and meaningful dialogue with peers, faculty, and guest speakers. Participants will receive an introduction to implementing social change in a collaborative and service oriented way by exploring LMU’s core values and finding out what it means to truly be “men and women for and with others.”

Students will experience an off-campus visit to Homeboy Industries, a unique community-based organization that provides hope, training and support to previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of the community.

Application Fee: $60
2019 Program Cost: $4,400*
The program cost includes:
- Tuition for two-week, non-credit course
- Housing for 2 weeks
- All meals
- Course materials
- Use of campus recreation facilities
- Class field trips
- A trip to Universal Studios
- An additional weekend day trip off campus
The cost does not include transportation to and from the program itself, personal spending money, or other incidentals.
