A two-week intensive exploring the fundamentals of 2D animation. 

Course Description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of animation in this exclusive two-week exploration of animation!

In the first week, participants will delve into the timeless art of traditional animation principles and tools. From understanding the fundamentals of frame-by-frame animation to mastering the art of storytelling through visuals, this foundational week sets the stage for a deep exploration into the roots of animation. Participants will have hands-on experience with classic techniques, learning to breathe life into characters through pencil and paper.

In the second week, we take a leap into the future of animation with a focus on 2D digital animation using cutting-edge tools like Toon Boom Harmony. Participants will discover the seamless integration of technology and creativity as they navigate the software's advanced features to bring their ideas to life. From character design to scene composition, this week is a dynamic journey into the world of contemporary animation, equipping participants with the skills to produce professional-grade 2D digital animations.

By the end of the program, not only will attendees have a comprehensive understanding of animation principles, but they'll also have created their very own digital masterpiece. Join us for this unique opportunity to blend tradition with innovation and embark on a transformative animation adventure!

  • Exploring Animation is a residential program on LMU's Los Angeles-area campus. There are no commuter options at this time - all participants are required to live on campus for the duration of their program.

  • In addition to their work in the classroom, students will have a chance to take a course-related field trip in Los Angeles.

    • Learn the basics of the traditional and digital animation process
    • Gain an understanding of the principles of animation
    • Develop an animated sequence from concept to color and final export
  • Application Fee: $65

    2024 Program Cost: $5,800

    The program cost includes:

    • Tuition for two-week, non-credit course
    • Housing and meals for two weeks
    • Course materials
    • Use of campus recreation facilities
    • Class field trips
    • Two weekend social trips off campus

  • This class is open to rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

    Requirements:

    • Online Application
    • Personal Essay: Read the Prompt Now
    • Portfolio of previous drawings/animations. If you do not have previous work, please submit a sketch of a character you would like to work on if you are selected for this program.
    • Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or counselor
    • High School Transcripts
    • $65 Application Fee
    • TOEFL Scores (for International applicants whose primary language is not English)
